Green light for small desalination plants

Cabinet on Tuesday gave the green light to the creation of small desalination plants by the private sector in order to help deal with the water shortage problem.

Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis said these smaller units will cater for ‘large consumers’ such as farmers’ groups, hotels, golf courses and water parks.

He said cabinet had approved a flexible and brief procedure to examine applications so that the process would not take longer than one month.

The aim is for all interested parties to be licensed soon so that the desalination plants can come into operation by next summer, he said adding that there have already been expressions of interest.

Moreover, a delegation of technocrats, businessmen and farmers’ representatives will be travelling with him to Israel next week to discuss water management and review new water saving technologies.
