Government needs €3m to cover private security services expenses

Relevant News

The Finance ministry has asked parliament to approve a €3 million budget for the provision of private security services to ministries, deputy ministries, semi-governmental organisations and other state services.

The Ministry also called for urgent approval of this budget so that tenders are called promptly, Phileleftheros reports.

The written request, accompanied by detailed data on this expenditure, is set to be reviewed by the House Finance Committee on Monday.

A number of state services do not use police force members even in cases where daily money transfers of tens if not hundreds of thousands of euros are carried out. Instead, members of private security companies are the ones accompanying civil servants to banks for deposits.

In addition, private security companies provide money dispatch services such in the case of the Republic’s Treasury where huge amounts received from 16 government departments have to go to the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The contract of this private security company started on May 1, 2015 and expires on April 30, 2022.

However, the submitted data to parliament shows that the best client of security companies from the different state agencies is the Ministry of Education with estimated costs for 2020 amounting to €1,736,351.

To begin with, an amount of €800,000 is needed this year to cover the cost of primary school morning guards and an additional amount of €230,000 for night school guards at all levels of education.
