Government makes representations to UN over fishing boat detention by Turkish forces

The Cyprus Government has made representations to the United Nations over the detention of a Cypriot fishing vessel and its crew by the Turkish occupation forces.

“The Government has made strong representations to the United Nations” Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou  told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

He added that the relevant state services are working for the release of the detained fishermen.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus is also working to resolve the situation.

“We are aware of this incident and are in contact with authorities of both sides to help resolve the situation,” UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique told CNA.

A Turkish warship forced on Friday a Cypriot fishing boat to sail to the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus, detaining its five-member crew, all Egyptian nationals.

The boat had been out fishing in international waters between Akamas and Kormakitis when it was approached by the Turkish vessel. Its crew boarded the fishing boat to carry out a search.

The fishing boat was then escorted to Turklish-occupied Kyrenia.
