GHS: Nurses association pushes for direct access to midwives

Relevant News

The Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association (CYNMA) is at odds with the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) as regards the public’s access to midwives from June under the GHS, philenews reports.

The HIO maintains that beneficiaries should have access to midwives only by referral from a gynaecologist, which CYNMA opposes stating that “midwives should be autonomous as stipulated by national and European legislation.”

CYNMA said that midwives are the go-to accessible professionals for monitoring low-risk pregnancies, delivering babies naturally and for examining postnatal mothers and newborns up to 28 days after delivery.

“We oppose the HIO’s intention to alter the philosophy behind direct access to midwives,” nurses said.

They also protest the ‘dismissive’ treatment of psychiatric nurses, who were initially excluded from GHS plans but it was later agreed that beneficiaries may have access to them via referral from a psychiatrist.

“The overall approach by the HIO to issues pertaining to midwifery and psychiatric and general nursing leads us to believe that the organisation is unwilling to reach an agreement with nurses and midwives,” the CYNMA noted.

Its president Yiannis Leontiou told Phileleftheros that the association is preparing for an upcoming meeting with the HIO to discuss the points of the agreement they deem problematic, and mentioned that the agreement should be monitored and reviewed at least once a year.
