Fugitive financier Jho Low who holds a Cypriot passport and nationality may have been in Wuhan, with Malaysian authorities now on the lookout for his return in light of the coronavirus outbreak, according to a Bloomberg report on Wednesday.
“Previously, we did receive intelligence that he was active in Wuhan,” Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. He did not say when Low was reported to be in the Chinese city.
“I have told Kuala Lumpur International Airport to monitor if he comes back with Covid-19.”
Malaysia has sought help from Interpol to track down Low, whose full name is Low Taek Jho, and have him face charges linked to his alleged role in the 1MDB scandal. He has consistently denied wrongdoing.
Low had arrived in Cyprus in mid-September 2015 and obtained his passport through the council of ministers two days later under an investment scheme. He had invested in some property in the Famagusta district said to be worth €5 million.
He was not wanted at the time in connection with the 1MDB scandal. Interpol did not issue a red notice until a year later.
