The installation of traffic cameras has been postponed yet again after a company asked for a change in the tender’s terms Phileleftheros reports.
Cyprus has been without traffic cameras for 13 years after the company awarded the contract was successfully challenged in court by a competitor.
Police have long been pressing for their re-introduction to boost efforts to curb traffic offences. Procedures were set in motion last year, with authorities saying that the new cameras would be in place some time in 2020.
However, the efforts have once again stumbled on legal obstacles.
Phileleftheros reports that one of the companies interested in bidding has challenged one of the conditions in the tender’s call, sending the issue to the tenders reviews authority for a decision even before bids were invited.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Akel general secretary Andros Kyprianou, Transport Minister Yiannos Karousos said that the authority has agreed to handle the complaint quickly, the tenders procedure must by law be extended.
Karousos said he was hopeful that the procedure before the board will be completed next month so that bids can be invited.
“The aim was for the pilot programme with the cameras to be in operation by November. Now we cannot go ahead with the tender… therefore we are looking at 2021,” he said.
The complaint regarding the tender’s condition relate to whether the cameras should photograph violations only from the back, but also from the front.
