The Health Service today has sprayed the area around the Pedieos river in order to kill potential disease-carrying mosquitoes.

“Today we sent experts along the river to to eliminate the mosquitoes from the stagnant waters,” Public Health Director Albertos Karis said.

“At a first glance, the insects did not appear to be hatching. We are also working together with the municipality of Paralimni in the area of Agia Triada where there are stagnant waters, regardless of the fact that the municipality has already recently sprayed the waters over there. ”

The Health Service has urged the public to take all necessary protective measures against the virus, like wearing appropriate clothing with long sleeves and trousers, and use insect repellent when outside.

Earlier this week, Karis stressed that the disease “is not transmitted from human to human but only through the bite of an infected insect to a healthy human being and that serious consequences only occur in the elderly and in those with weakened immune systems.”
