Former community head imprisoned for abusing power

Following a long judicial process, which started in 2015 and was completed just yesterday, the Nicosia District Court put in jail the former 62-year-old community head of Potamia village and the 67 former vice-president of the community.

According to the case, the two accused were receiving money from the companies of regional quarries in order to help families in the village with financial problems but were getting the money themselves.

According to the verdict the offenses took place between December 2005 and March 2015 and had to do with 19 different cases. They were both using the relevant account in the Potamia Co-Operative as if it was their personal account. The amount embezzled by the two is almost 59,107 euros while the former community head also embezzled another 20,000.

The verdict noted that the two took advantage of their position to take money aimed to help poor families.
