FM to discuss Cyprus issue, bilateral ties, energy and security in US meetings

Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides departs on Saturday for Washington where he will hold contacts and meetings with US State Department officials, Senators and Congressmen.

According to a press release issued today from MFA, Cyprus-US bilateral relations, the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, security and cooperation issues in Eastern Mediterranean region and energy will be on the agenda of the meetings.

Christodoulides will also attend the AIPAC Policy Conference to take place on March 24-26 in the US capital.

The minister will participate as a speaker in two roundtable debates, during which he will have the opportunity to present Cyprus’ foreign policy and its role in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, in the framework of tripartite cooperation developed with Greece and other countries of the region.

The Minister will depart from Washington next Tuesday.

President Nicos Anastasiades participated last Wednesday in the 6th trilateral summit in Jerusalem with Premiers of Israel and Greece and with the participation of the US Secretary of State

The AIPAC is the largest gathering of America’s pro-Israel community. Confirmed speakers include vice President Michael Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
