Paphos district court today fined two men €400 each for breaking a decree banning all unnecessary movement.
The government has repeatedly warned the public to comply with the stay at home rules and hundreds of police have been on the streets checking pedestrians and drivers and booking hundreds.
Parliament will this afternoon approve legislation authorising police to impose a €150 fine. But as Justice Minister Yiorgos Savvides explained yesterday, police have the discretion to take people to court where they face stiffer fines and even the possibility of a prison sentence.
He also warned that such cases would be fast tracked in courts which are currently dealing only with urgent cases.
Hours later police patrols in Paphos found two men, aged 29 and 42, out and about without justification.
They appeared in court today and were each fined €400.
