Two people sustained serious burns after a fire that started around 09:30 am on Saturday on a tanker ship near Maroni sea, off Larnaca.

The Coast Guard, the Navy, the Catastrophe Response Unit and a private company conducted an air-sea rescue operation to transfer the ship’s crew on land.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) said in an announcement that 17 people were on the ship (7 Greeks, 9 Indians and 1 Georgian).

Five crew members who had jumped in the sea were rescued and transferred to Nicosia General Hospital. Two Indian crew members are suffering from serious burns, while three Greeks were discharged after they received first aid.

The fire was set under control and the ship has been docked 200m off Zygi coast, JRCC said.

According to philenews, the ship has a Maltese flag and carried no cargo.

It departed Cyprus around 03:30 am heading to Greece.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. It is believed that it might have been caused by a fuel leak.
