According to a research by Accept LOATKI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) Cyprus, medieval and anachronistic practices are being implemented against LOATKI people in order to change their sexual preferences. These practices include exorcism, hormone-therapies, marriages, use of Viagra, prayers, advice by priests and psychologies and so forth.
The issue was recently discussed at the House Legal Committee following the submission of a draft bill by AKEL MP George Koukoumas, who stressed the need to enact legislation to protect these people.
A person who wished to remain anonymous, confessed one such experience with a priest who suggested to him various practices so that he would not appear to be a LOATKI.
