Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, intends to issue an executive regulation on health statistics, which will be harmonized in the member-states as of 2023. The statistics will include surgeries, such as caesarian sections.
This is what Kyriakides replied on behalf of the European Commission to a written question submitted on 16 May 2022 by Member of the European Parliament Demetris Papadakis, regarding the high percentages of caesarean sections in Cyprus.
Stella Kyriakides said that the European Commission shares official statistics of caesarian sections, collected by the member-states on a voluntary basis. She also noted that there is currently no definition of unnecessary caesareans.
She added that the Commission is aware of the recommendations of the World Health Organization regarding the non-clinical interventions to reduce unnecessary caesarean sections.
