EuroAsia Interconnector inauguration ceremony in Nicosia next week

Relevant News

In a symbolic but also of substance step, the EuroAsia Interconnector inauguration ceremony is to be held at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia next Friday (the 14th).

The EuroAsia Interconnector is a leading 2,000 MW multi-terminal interconnector that connects the national electricity grids of Cyprus, Greece (Crete) and Israel with continental Europe.

It is the longest (1,208km) and deepest (up to 3,000m) HVDC interconnector in the world, a press release also said.

The ceremony will include welcome addresses by President Nicos Anastasiades, Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, Ministry of the Environment and Energy of Greece Kostas Skrekas and EuroAsia Interconnector Chief Executive Officer Nasos Ktorides.

Following the approval of €658 million by the European financing mechanism “Connecting Europe Facility” and €100 million by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, EuroAsia Interconnector proceeds to the construction phase.

Construction works will begin soon at an area near Kophinou under the administration of Germany’s Siemens and the deadline is 2027.

The double-cable to be used will be supplied by the Norwegian HVDC Nexans.

EuroAsia Interconnector ends the energy isolation of Cyprus, ensures the security of supply for Israel, Cyprus and Greece, and creates a reliable green interconnector for Europe.
