EU budget and relations with the UK among the highlights of the EP plenary session in Strasbourg

The EU budget and the EU-UK future relations with the European Parliament are among the issues that will be tackled at the European Parliament session starting on Monday.

Ahead of the European Council starting on 20 February, MEPs will discuss their priorities for the next long-term EU budget with the Council and the Commission. MEPs will reiterate their call for an ambitious multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2021-2027 that ensures the continuity of the EU’s main policies, like the regional and agricultural policies.

Newly-elected ECB President Christine Lagarde will address Plenary for the first time to discuss the Eurozone’s economic governance and ECB activities.

MEPs will assess the European Commission’s proposals on how to strengthen the EU accession process, on Monday.
The situation of migrants and asylum-seekers waiting at the EU’s external borders to ask for asylum on European territory will be discussed on Wednesday.

Parliament’s green light to the free trade and investment deals between the EU and Vietnam will be discussed on Tuesday and put to the vote on Wednesday.

At the same time, Parliament will debate on Tuesday and vote on Wednesday on a resolution setting out MEPs’ stance on an ambitious new EU-UK partnership.

Challenges arising from artificial intelligence and the measures the EU should take to protect consumers will be addressed in a debate on Monday, followed by a resolution on Wednesday.

MEPs will discuss the priorities they want to see included in the 2020-2024 Gender Equality Strategy with Commissioner for equality Helena Dalli on Wednesday.

The MEPs will debate and vote on the EU priorities for the 64th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW64), to be held in New York in March.

MEPs will assess the EU’s response to rising antisemitism, racism and hatred in the EU, in a plenary debate on Tuesday with Council and Commission representatives.

On Wednesday, MEPs will vote on a resolution urging the EU to come up with a strategy to eradicate female genital mutilation.

On Tuesday, MEPs will discuss with Council and Commission representatives how to address the ongoing threat to the rule of law in Poland.

MEPs will debate the US’ recently presented Middle East plan and the current security situation in Syria, on Tuesday afternoon.
