The Education Ministry will outsource the guarding of primary schools between 7 and 8 am to the private sector.
It will also introduce entry cards for parents and guardians and will ensure schools have a 2.5 metre wall or fence. Intercoms will be installed at the entrance and where necessary cameras.
This was announced by Education Minister Costas Hambiaouris after a meeting at the ministry on the measures approved by cabinet on Tuesday.
The meeting discussed the procedures to be followed as well as the timelines so that the measures can be implemented quickly.
He clarified that the entry card is not for the pupils but the parents or guardians or other authorised adults who pick them up.
Hambiaouris added that instructions would be given to the school boards to contact district fire stations to carry out fire safety checks at schools.
