Drunk driver arrested after crashing into Larnaca Airport roundabout sign

Relevant News

A 21 year old driver is under arrest after going over the Larnaca Airport roundabout and crashing into the sign before coming to stop at around 6.30 am on Monday.

Larnaca traffic police chief Haris Hadjiyiasemi told the Cyprus News Agency that when police went to the scene the young man — who is an asylum seeker from India and a resident of Limassol — tested positive for alcohol with 67 mg — more than seven times the legal limit of 9 mg.

Police asked him to accompany them to Larnaca police station but he sat down on the road and started shouting insults at the police officers and at one point pushed an officer.

He was finally taken to the police station but will not cooperate, Hadjiyiasemi added.

Police are investigating a case of assaulting a police officer,  shouting insults and causing a disturbance as well as drunk driving and causing a road accident.

He remains under arrest and is expected to appear in court to be remanded in custody.

Hadjiyiasemi said the driver and a student from India were driving back to Limassol from Ayia Napa when they ended up at the airport.

The co-driver — who owns the car — also tested positive for alcohol with 22 mg.

Police are investigating if the car is covered by insurance.  Police are also expected to investigate the owner for allowing the 21 year old to drive the car recklessly, leading to an accident.
