Relevant News

The Anti-Narcotics Unit (YKAN) noted that after a two-year suspension due to the Covid pandemic, the networks trafficking drugs have returned in a dynamic way. The Service noted that the quantities confiscated until the end of July, outweighed the quantities of the whole 2021.

According to YKAN data, during 2021, 240.6 kilos of cannabis had been confiscated, 212 kilos in 2020 and another 227 in 2019. In 2018, 318.6 kilos were found and was the year with the biggest quantity confiscated.

According to Stelios Sergides, alternate director of YKAN, this year 15.5 kilos of cocaine were confiscated, while the important thing is that the quantities of methamphetamine (crystal ice) confiscated were 3,549 grams when last year that quantity was 3,642, which indicates a stabilization in demand. As Mr. Sergides noted methamphetamine is now established as the third substance consumed by users.

It is also important to note that more and more young people are involved in drug cases, since according to YKAN, 34 young people have so far been involved, with the youngest been 14.
