Driver who used feet to steer truck to answer charges on Thursday

Relevant News

A 43 year old driver who posted a video on social media driving a truck with his feet appeared before Larnaca district court on Tuesday where his lawyer asked for time to review the facts of the case.

He is due back in court on Thursday to enter a plea.

He faces charges of reckless and dangerous driving, driving a non-registered vehicle, driving without insurance and driving without free hands. Reckless driving carries a penalty of up to two years in prison and/or a fine of up to 1200 euro.

The video of the man driving with his feet went viral on social media on November 1, prompting harsh words from the police who soon tracked him down and charged him with reckless and dangerous driving and set him free pending trial.

In a message on Twitter before his arrest police had said that “driving is not a game or a joke. We have a responsibility to be careful at the wheel and show respect not only for our own lives but those of others.”

The president of NGO REACTION Marios Stavrou said that this kind of behaviour was unacceptable.

Speaking on state radio a few days after the incident, Stavrou also said that reckless driving affects other drivers on the road not just the person who is being reckless. Unfortunately, he added, the incident with the driver who steered his vehicle with his feet is not isolated.

There are many other cases which are not recorded. Other drivers hold a cup of coffee with one hand and their mobile phone with the other hand, steering the wheel with their knees. There are tens of cases where instead of being extra careful because of bad weather, drivers record videos with the phones to post on social media.
