Doctor found guilty of negligence in boy’s death to also face Medical Society’s disciplinary measures

A doctor found guilty of medical negligence in the death of a 10-year-old boy and handed an 18-month suspended sentence is now confronted with Cyprus Medical Society disciplinary measures as well.

The decision – to be taken by the Society’s ethics committee after carrying out an inquiry into the Larnaca General Hospital doctor’s case – must be announced within a month, Philenews reported on Thursday.

Provided measures range between a reprimand and withdrawal of the medical practice  license of GP Iracles Pantelidakis who had failed to examine the head X-ray of Stavros Giorgalli. The boy later died from his injury which was sustained in May 2018.

The boy was playing basketball with classmates at his primary school yard in Alethriko when he fell and injured his head.

The Larnaca District Court judge said that Dr Pantelidakis’ treatment was reckless and dangerous, adding that he evaluated the child’s x-ray hastily, superficially and incorrectly.

The doctor had said the child suffered a mild head injury and discharged him.
