There was a disturbance at Limassol central police station last night after it emerged that one of the men in custody had tested positive for coronavirus.

Citing sources, philenews reports that the man refused to get into the ambulance which had come to pick him up to take him to the Eden Resort Rehabilitation Centre in Tersephanou which is used for asymptomatic coronavirus patients and those discharged from the referral hospital.

The man started shouting. There was a disturbance when others detainees also started shouting, but after some time police were able to put him in the ambulance.

However the disturbance continued, with the other detainees throwing their mattresses into the central yard and setting them on fire. The fire was brought under control and the detainees returned to their cells,p philenews added.

Both Limassol police station and the old Limassol Hospital were named by the Health Ministry as having positive coronavirus cases. They were among the seven announced yesterday.

In an official announcement, the Health Ministry said that the management of both premises had been informed and the infected people and their close contacts taken elsewhere.

The areas have also been disinfected, it added.
