DiCarlo to brief UN Security Council on Cyprus after UNSG submits report on his good offices mission

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo will brief the UN Security Council members about developments regarding efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, after the submission of the UNSG’s report on his Good Offices Mission in Cyprus to the Council, scheduled to take place on April 15.

CNA has learned that DiCarlo’s briefing is expected to take place during the second half of April. The UNSG’s report will outline developments regarding the effort undertaken by the UNSG’s special envoy for Cyprus Jane Holl Lute, with a view to formulate the terms of reference that will pave the way for the resumption of the Cyprus talks.

Lute is now expected to visit the island once again for meetings with the parties, after the contacts she had with the guarantor powers, namely Greece, UK and Turkey.

Meanwhile, as CNA has learned, the UNSG’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, had on Wednesday a meeting with the new US Ambassador to Cyprus Judith Gail Garber, who presented on Monday her credentials to President Nicos Anastasiades.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in the summer of 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
