Developments on two new crossing points expected in the framework of leaders’ meeting

Relevant News

The Greek Cypriot side is in contact with the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) as regards the opening of two new crossing points, but developments on this issue are expected in the framework of the meeting which President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will have on October 26, and not before that, a source has told CNA.

Asked about the Turkish military post, at Dherynia crossing point, the same source said that there are positive developments but the issue has not closed yet.

It added that the issue of the two new crossing points at Dherynia and Lefka will be discussed during the meeting between Anastasiades and Akinci, who will evaluate the situation.

President Anastasiades said recently, in statements he made about the crossing point in Dherynia, that the agreement was for the Turkish military post to be moved back.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks last year at the Swiss resort of Crans – Montana ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
