Defence Minister proposes the establishment of reserve mechanism for crisis periods

Cyprus Defence Minister Savvas Angelides has proposed to his EU counterparts the establishment of a reserve mechanism for crisis periods like the current one with the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that this mechanism could provide the uninterrupted supply of military and medical equipment. The Minister on Monday had a video conference with his EU counterparts during which they discussed the current pandemic and how the MS cope.

He briefed the EU Ministers on how the National Guard in Cyprus assists with the implementation of the restrictive measures. Angelides also suggested the exchanging of experiences and best practices between EU member states on how the armed forces deal with the covid19 crisis.

The Ministers also discussed how pandemic affects EU missions and operations in third countries under the Common Defence and Security Policy. They agreed to make every effort to ensure the health of the staff while maintaining its combat readiness.
