Deductions from salaries and pensions of civil servants come to an end

2022 will be history in a few days and so will be the deductions from salaries and pensions of civil service employees, Philenews reports.

Specifically, as from January 1, 2023 these pay cuts for the past 10 consecutive years for some 86,000 wider public sector comes to an end.

With the new year, the partial removal of deductions is completed.

Based on the agreement between the state and trade unions the regulation of gradual reduction of deductions began on July 1, 2018.

And on the first day of the new year these were further reduced to zero, that is as of January 1, 2023.

In order to implement the plan, the Parliament had also passed a bill to that effect.

Next year, the termination of deductions will mainly affect employees with earnings above €2,001 per month.

In previous years, the wages of the lowest paid ones were also restored as the deductions were earlier reset to zero.

Noted is that from 2018 till January 1, 2023 it is estimated that a total amount of €265 million will have been returned to employees.

The pay cuts were introduced by end of 2012 in a bid by the government  to tidy up public finances.
