Dali pollution: Teachers’ union threatens to shut down school

Relevant News

Teachers’ union Poed said yesterday that if urgent measures are not taken to combat pollution at C’ Dali Primary School by nearby heavy industry it is prepared to shut down the school, according to Phileleftheros.

In its latest board meeting, the union decided the following:

  1. We welcome the decision to move the polluting factories from the area, and this needs to take place the soonest possible.
  2. Until that happens, the competent authorities need to ensure liveable conditions at the school for both pupils and teachers.
  3. In particular, experts need to be summoned to advise on equipment that ensures as much as possible good air quality in classrooms. We will not tolerate for children and our members to operate under damaging health conditions.
  4. The Education Ministry must work together with the school’s teachers on an alternative school schedule that should be put into force whenever pollution levels are deemed dangerous for classes at regular school hours.
  5. An action plan has been put together by Poed and the school’s teachers to be proposed to the Education Ministry to mitigate the problem until its definitive settlement.
  6. Should competent authorities fail to install air quality devices in the classrooms and the school’s closed areas imminently, then the union will move ahead with strikes and other measures.

The Environment Minister Costas Kadis said in an interview on ACTIVE radio that he is in discussions with the factories regarding measures to mitigate the issue, while other land plots and areas are being examined for their relocation.
