Cyprus will not send weapons to Ukraine, President Nicos Anastasiades said Thursday.
On his way to an event and in reply to a question by a journalist on whether Cyprus would send weapons to Ukraine, also noting that political parties say this would be disastrous, the president said:
“I want to say one thing. Cyprus is semi-occupied and needs its defense armoring; consequently, we cannot survive without defense armoring. So, I want to ease any concerns. We are not going to send weapons to Ukraine.
However, he added that “if there is a country willing to replace our weapons with modern and of equal potency equipment that can act as a deterrent that is a different issue.”
The whole issue began due to recent statements by the government spokesman to New York Times saying that Cyprus would be ready to consider this transfer.
