Cyprus, other Mediterranean countries, intensify efforts to lure tourists

Relevant News

Cyprus, along with Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Malta and Croatia have intensified efforts to lure vaccinated tourists following a disastrous last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The competition of the Mediterranean countries is in full swing and much revolves around the question of who can get its residents vaccinated the fastest.

Aware that the pie will be smaller again this year compared to 2019, Cyprus has already opened its door to tourism while Greece followed suit as of May 14.

Just like other competitors, Cyprus is eyeing tourists from the UK and Germany even though the European Union has yet to roll out its cellphone-friendly travel pass system.

But Mediterranean member-states, driven deeper into debt by the pandemic and highly dependent on tourism revenues, are not waiting.

As of Monday, a SafePass is no longer required for outdoor activities in Cyprus while the curfew has been extended to midnight from 11pm.

The new relaxation of coronavirus measures was justified on the fact that the holiday island’s epidemiological picture has improved. And that the number of people vaccinated against Covid-19 has increased.
