The Cyprus Bar Association has strongly protested the government’s intention for citizens to effectively needing proof of immunisation or of testing negative for Covid-19 to be able to get around.
This intention is set to come in effect on May 10 – the day after the current lockdown ends, according to an official decree issued on Monday.
However, a Bar Association statement on Monday afternoon not only slammed the intention but also questioned the legality of the third lockdown which began on Monday.
“It is imperative that appropriate limits of the necessary restrictions and the constitutional freedoms of the citizens get to be determined responsibly,” it said.
“Aiming primarily at the protection of human life and public health it should also protect the constitutional rights of the citizens…Let’s not forget that vaccination in Cyprus is not mandatory,” it added.
The official decree stated that as of May 10 the current lockdown measures will be lifted and the arrangements in force will be reinstated.
Provided that in gathering places – dining areas, meeting places, gyms, retail shops, theatre – visitors must carry a rapid test or PCR valid for 72 hours. Or else, they have been vaccinated with at least the first dose of the vaccine three weeks.
