In a posting on his account on Twitter, President Nicos Anastasiades wrote that “It is with great satisfaction that I welcome the announcement by the US State Department on the complete lifting of the U.S. arms embargo on Cyprus. This is a landmark decision, reflecting the burgeoning strategic relationship between the two countries, including in the area of security.”
Furthermore, he noted: “I also wish to publicly thank Senator Bob Menendez for all his work making possible today’s decision, which is in accordance with his East Med Security and Energy Partnership Act of 2019. Yesterday, I spoke to the Senator and once again expressed my gratitude for his friendship.”
The Cyprus Foreign Ministry in its own posting on Twitter also welcomed the US decision to proceed with the full lifting of the 1987 arms embargo against Cyprus, noting that it is “a political milestone that illustrates the continuous deepening of the United States – Cyprus strategic partnership in security and defense, as an integral part of regional stability mosaic.
