The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts has been admitted to the European network of academies ALLEA (All European Academies), the academy said on Friday.

The admission took place at a videoconference with the delegates of ALLEA member academies on Wednesday with the participation of President of the Academy Loucas Christoforou and its Secretary-General Achilles C. Emilianides, who will also be the first representative of the Cyprus Academy at ALLEA.

“The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts expresses its satisfaction for its acceptance as a full member of ALLEA. It is an honour and an opportunity for which we thank ALLEA and its Member Academies,” Emilianides said following the meeting.

“Both the Cyprus Academy and ALLEA represent the Natural Sciences, the Humanities, and the Social Sciences and this makes the relationship between the Cyprus Academy and ALLEA a truly important one. We do hope that our collaboration in addressing interdisciplinary issues and in advancing new trans-disciplinary initiatives will be mutually beneficial,” he added.

ALLEA is the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, representing more than 50 academies from over 40 EU and non-EU countries.

“ALLEA is independent from political, religious, commercial or ideological interests, encourages collaboration among its members, provides opinions on matters of science, research and innovation and promotes the exchange of information between the European Academies and the provision of advisory scientific support to European policymakers,” the Cyprus Academy said in an announcement on Friday.

The admission to ALLEA, the announcement noted, in addition to joining EASAC a few months ago, “enables the Cyprus Academy as it enters the second year since its founding to be officially represented in the most prominent European academies unions. This fulfils one of its founding aims for participation in European and global academies unions, as prior to the founding of the Cyprus Academy our country was one of the very few European nations not participating.”
