Cypriots spend hundreds of thousands of euros for fuel in occupied areas

Relevant News

A survey conducted by the Cyprus Consumers Association shows that more and more drivers from the Republic of Cyprus visit the occupied areas in order to fill upĀ  their fuel tanks.

According to the survey, 3.624.400 litres of unleaded gasoline and 3.700.000 litres of diesel have been sold in the first five months of 2018, which corresponds to 2.21% of overall unleaded sales and 2.70% of overall diesel sales in Cyprus.

Retail outlets for petroleum products in Cyprus are estimated to have lost approximately ā‚¬403,000 over the same period, with their commission being about 5.5 cents a litre.

According to data from credit card clearing firm JCC, Cypriots spent ā‚¬262,000 on fuel in the occupied areas in the first five months of 2018, while last year they spent a total of ā‚¬310,000 on their credit cards throughout 2017.

Meanwhile, there was a slight drop in the Ā price of unleaded gasoline and diesel . For consumers this translated into savings in June 2018 of ā‚¬20,975 for gasoline 95 and ā‚¬19,550 for diesel.

There was a Ā slight rise in fuel sales within the first five months of 2018. However, there was a -2.03% drop in sales of unleaded gasoline, compared to 2017. Also, despite a 6.12% rise in diesel sales, this rise is smaller compared to that noted between 2016 and 2017 (8.82%).

According to the Cyprus Consumers Association, this may be connected to the fact that more and more Cypriot drivers choose to fill their fuel tanks inĀ the occupied areas.
