Cypriot wanted for stealing gold arrested in UK

Relevant News

A 43 year old Cypriot man suspected of stealing nine kilos of goldĀ  has been arrested in the United Kingdom and handed over to Cypriot authorities.

Police said the man was arrested on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued against him in May 2016.

It followed a complaint by a Limassol jewellery shop owner to police in March 2014 that the suspect had travelled to the UK taking nine kilos of gold in various shapes and sizes worth ā‚¬200,000 on his account, as he had done in the past.

But the suspect told the shop owner that he had been robbed on the street in UK as he was walking to his hotel.

The suspect and the shop owner went to the UK together to report the case to British police but the 43Ā  year old went his own way and stopped all contact with the complainant.

Investigations carried out in cooperation with Europol determined that the 43 year had not been robbed but had sold part of the gold to a British company for ā‚¬96,000.

An arrest warrant was issued on March 31, 2014 and a European warrant issued in May 2016. He was then handed over to Cypriot authorities and brought back to Cyprus on Thursday.
