Cypriot students to protest outside King’s College London

Relevant News

A protest outside King’s College London by Cypriot students is planned for Wednesday evening when Turkish Cypriot politician Kudret Ozersay is set to give a speech.

The Union of Cypriot Students in the UK object to Ozersay being addressed as “deputy prime minister” of the breakaway state in Turkish-held north Cyprus.

Cyprus is divided since a 1974 invasion by Turkey which still maintains troops in the EU-member state’s north.

The organisers of the speech, titled “Cyprus: Status Quo or something new?”, is the Turkish Club of King’s College.

Cypriot students had called on the university’s administration to cancel the event or at least change the way the speaker is addressed, citing the illegality of the regime in the north. But their calls seem to have fallen on deaf ears.
