Customs on Tuesday announced a series of seizures of contraband tobacco from a number of points of entry over the past few days.
They include the seizure on February 5 at the Ledra Street checkpoint of 3,000 grams of tobacco and 800 cigarettes from a Briton who was given an out of court fine of €1,300.
On February 11, a Bulgarian national was caught with 500 grams of tobacco and 2000 cigarettes at the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint. He paid a fine of €800 and another €500 for the return of his vehicle.
A Belgian national was caught with 6800 cigarettes on arrival at Larnaca Airport from Tel Aviv, was arrested and fined €900 by Larnaca district court the following day.
Two Ukrainians caught at Larnaca Airport with 27,260 cigarettes on arrival from the Ukraine were arrested, fined €6,000 and released.
Other busts include the discovery of 13,2000 cigarettes and 1,250 grams of tobacco during a search of premises in the Nicosia district and the owner was fined €7.,00.
In all cases the duty free tobacco and cigarettes were confiscated.
