Larnaca district court on Monday suspended the driving licence of a 33 year old driver for 50 days after he was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol on two separate occasions.
The driver, who is a non-Cypriot permanent resident of Larnaca, was also fined €900 and given eight points on his licence.
Larnaca traffic police chief Haris Hadjiyiasemis told the Cyprus News Agency that the driver had been stopped by police on a routine check on June 16. He tested positive for alcohol with 77 mg of alcohol in his blood, more than three times the 22 mg limit. A few weeks later, on July 6, he was again caught driving under the influence — this with 75 mg rather than the legally permitted 22.
Both cases were taken to court and on Monday he was fined €450, given four points on his licence and had his licence suspended for 25 days for each offence meaning a total fine of €900, eight points and a suspended licence for 50 days.
“It appears that the police’s campaigns are beginning to deliver results since those caught are sent to court and are tried immediately. It also appears that the courts have realised that they must impose tougher sentences, something which the police have been seeking for some time,” he added.
Monday’s court decision coincided with the start of a week long police campaign against drunk driving.
