Court renews remand of Ayia Napa shooting suspect

Larnaca district court on Wednesday ordered a 38 year old man from Paphos be held in police custody forĀ  another eight days as police investigate an attempted murder at an Ayia Napa bar in the early hours of Sunday, February 16.

Police believe the intended suspect was an Ayia Napa businessman who had left the bar about 20 minutes before a lone gunman fired a number of shots from the pavement outside. Three men and a woman who were at the bar at the time where injured.

Police investigator Panicos Droushiotis asked for the remand be renewed. Defence lawyer Katia Pieroudi did not object.

Another man currently serving a life sentence for murder is also being held in connection with the same case.

Police have recovered the weapon, a Kalashnikov,Ā  as well as loaded revolver, have obtained CCTV footage from the area and carried out searches in eight hotels in Larnaca and Ayia Napa.

The suspect was taken to court under tight security and wearing a bullet proof vest
