Coronavirus: Woman in quarantine in hospital pending test results

Relevant News

A woman is in quarantine on the fifth floor of Limassol Hospital pending results on whether she has contracted coronavirus, but a couple who also visited the hospital yesterday have been sent home, the Cyprus News Agency reports.

All three — who had recently travelled to northern Italy — showed up at the hospital last night.

The woman exhibited symptoms which doctors said needed to be further investigated. She has been placed in quarantine in a specially designated area on the fifth floor of the hospital until test results come back.

The couple were initially admitted to hospital but then sent home because they exhibited no symptoms, the general director of the state health organisation for Limassol and Paphos, Christos Nicolaou told the Cyprus News Agency.

Nicolaou said a woman who had come into contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus in northern Italy and tested negative has been in quarantine. He said the 14 day period ends today and she will be discharged.

Meanwhile, a special meeting of the Council of Ministers will be held today to discuss Cyprus’ preparedness for a possible coronavirus outbreak.

A decision is expected on potential isolation areas for asymptomatic individuals who have been in contact with coronavirus cases and under WHO protocols need to be quarantined for 14 days.

Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou has already announced the government housing in Troodos, including units at the Presidential summer residence, will be used but added that the ministry was also looking at three other potential sites should there be a need for more space.

Ioannou added that the ministry will be stepping up information campaign to inform the public.
