Coronavirus: President denies supermarkets, shops to close

President Nicos Aanastasiades on Friday rejected as unfounded rumours that the new measures  he is due to announce later this evening to contain the spread of coronavirus provide for the closure of supermarkets, shops and companies.

“I have been informed of an intense rumour that the measures I plan to announce apparently include the closure of supermarkets, shops or other kinds of companies. This is totally untrue. Therefore the panic being caused is totally unnecessary,” he said on Twitter.

Έλαβα γνώση μίας έντονης ψιθυρολογίας πως στα μέτρα που προτίθεμαι να ανακοινώσω περιλαμβάνεται δήθεν το κλείσιμο υπεραγορών, καταστημάτων ή άλλης μορφής επιχειρήσεων. Ουδέν αναληθέστερο. Συνεπώς αχρείαστος είναι ο πανικός που προκαλείται.

The president is due to give a televised address this evening and is expected to announce additional measures.
