Another five people in Cyprus have tested positive for coronavirus, the Health Ministry announced late on Saturday evening.

  • two of the confirmed cases returned from Italy, were in self-isolation at home and contacted the authorities when they developed symptoms
  • two were in self-isolation at home and had close contact with a confirmed case who was detected a few days ago
  • one person was in the intensive care unit of Paphos Hospital and had been visited by family from the UK

As regards the management  of the confirmed case in the ICU of Paphos Hospital, the state health services organisation in cooperation with the epidemiological monitoring unit of the Health Ministry has drawn up a plan of action, the Health Ministry said.

Among other this includes tracing the contacts the patient had in the hospital and his close family environment, the closure of the hospital to the public and sanitizing both inside and outside.  Further details will be given by OKIPI.

The epidemiological monitoring unit of the Health Ministry has already started tracing the contacts of the five new cases so as to carry out tests.

The ministry’s announcement came hours before new measures come into effect to contain the spread of coronavirus. These include restrictions on entry to the Republic of Cyprus, tougher rules for crossing the Green Line and a requirement that all arriving passengers (with the exception of those from Italy, Iran, South Korea and Hubei province in China who must quarantine) must self-isolate with telephone monitoring for 14 days.

The Foreign Ministry has also issued a new travel advisory effective from 1 am March 15 to March 30 advising all Cypriots not to travel unless absolutely essential.

A total of five people have tested positive for coronavirus in the Turkish held north where authorities have shut the private and public sector with the exception of basic services, supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and petrol stations, and banned entry to all arrivals with the exception of Turkish Cypriots and legal residents.
