Trade union confederations DEOK and SEK have offered their holiday home facilities and camping sites to the government to use as isolation centres for asymptomatic individuals who have come into contact with confirmed cases of coronavirus.
Under WHO protocols, such individuals must be isolated for 14 days.
The news came as cabinet met under President Nicos Anastasiades to review preparedness for a possible coronavirus outbreak.
The meeting is also expected to announce the locations that will be used for isolation. Yesterday cabinet said that government housing in Troodos, including buildings within the presidential summer residence will be used for this purpose, but added that another three locations are being considered if more room is needed.
DEOK said that it had offered its summer holiday homes in Platres as a gesture of social responsibility and solidarity.
“We are convinced that responsibility to contain a possible contagion rests not only with the government but with all social groups, political parties and business groups.”
It added that those to be hosted at its facilities will be asymptomatic but if they do develop symptoms they will be taken to hospital and the area be disinfected.
The union appealed to the public not to give in to prejudice and excessive fears but to support the government’s plan of action against coronavirus.
SEK said it too was placing at the disposal of the government its facilities outside residential areas for this purpose.
