Coronavirus: Charter flights to north suspended; groups of more than 10 not allowed to cross

The Turkish Cypriot authorities have announced new measures to contain the spread of coronavirus including suspending some charter flights until April 1 and prohibiting groups of more than 10 from crossing from the government controlled areas for excursions or pilgrimages  until March 15.

They have also closed all educational institutions of all levels until Sunday and given instructions for schools and school buses to be disinfected.

The decisions came after a German tourist tested positive for the coronavirus. She has been put in quarantine and the tourists who were with her have been isolated.

Turkish Cypriots authorities had announced tougher measures at points of entry and checkpoints yesterday after two coronavirus cases were confirmed in the government controlled areas.

All school events and festivals have been prohibited until March 15. The hotels at which the German tourists are staying will remain in quarantine and which will gradually be lifted.

Special teams are disinfecting checkpoints, tourist sights in the Famagusta area as well as at Tymbou airport and the prisons where visits have been postponed until March 16.

The suspension of flights applies to charters flights from Italy, France and Germany. All other flights are being carried out as normal.

Children’s play areas have closed as a precaution while performances and seminars cancelled.
