Coronavirus: British Bases have ‘no current plans’ to close Pergamos, Strovilia checkpoints

The British Bases do not currently plan to close the checkpoints at Pergamos and Strovilia, but are in consultation with the two sides as regards measures to prevent a coronavirus outbreak, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Friday.

The government has closed the checkpoints at Ledra Street, Dherynia, Astromeritis and Lefka in what it has described as a temporary measure to free personnel for additional screening at the three other checkpoints — Kato Pyrgos, Ayios Dhometios and Ledra Palace. It plans to review this decision on Monday.

There are also two checkpoints in the Bases and Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou had said last week that consultations regarding preventive measures would be held with the Base authorities.

On Friday the Cyprus News Agency asked the British High Commission whether the Bases had any plans to change the status quo of the two checkpoints because of the coronavirus.

The High Commission responded that British Bases were in consultation with the two sides to contain the threat of coronavirus. “For the time being there are no plans to close the checkpoints at Pergamos and Strovolia,” the spokesman added.
