Coronavirus: All schools in Cyprus to close for one week

The Education Ministry has announced that all schools in Cyprus will close for one week from Friday, March 13 to Friday, March 20 as part of measures to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The government yesterday ordered the closure of schools in Nicosia for three days, prompting calls from other districts that all schools should close.

Nicosia schools will now remain closed until March 20. In addition, all schools public and private at all levels will close as from Friday. The one day is intended to give parents the opportunity tomorrow to make day care arrangements.

All education programmes of the ministry as well as special schools, public and private and tuition centres islandwide will also suspend operation for a week from Friday.

Moreover, all tertiary education institutions, public and private throughout Cyprus must close until March 22,

The closure is a precaution as there there have been no coronavirus cases linked to schools, the ministry clarified.

It urged calm and advised the public to comply with the instructions of the Health Ministry,

Meanwhile, the ministry is looking at the possibility of remote learning especially for pupils in their last year of high school who are preparing for the end of year exams.

It is also examining the possibility of extending the school term if the need arises to cover lost teaching time.

Consultations are underway with employers’ organisations to facilitate working mothers during the period when schools close.
