Coronavirus: A round-up of the latest developments in Cyprus

Thirteen new confirmed Coronavirus cases were announced by the Ministry of Health on Monday night, followed by one new case confirmed in the occupied areas, raising the total island-wide to 53.

The Cyprus High Commission in London has set up two new hotlines for Cypriots stranded in the UK following the government’s latest travel restrictions in effect from March 16, 18:00 Cyprus time up to and including April 30.

The government is to have an emergency meeting on new entry regulations on Tuesday following a flood of complaints from people stranded abroad and the dramatic entry into the Republic of passengers that arrived at Larnaca and Paphos airports without the government’s required health certificate, in an evening that saw the intervention of Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos to allow 70 passengers from UK to disembark at Larnaca and Paphos airports. The European Investment Bank announced it will rapidly mobilise up to €40 billion in funding for Cypriot and European businesses and the State Health Services Organisation circulated an update on the operation of Cyprus public hospitals.

Meanwhile, two army camps in Nicosia are in lockdown and the Defence Minister was suspected of and tested negative to Coronavirus, and the Church is divided following the Archbishop’s call on the faithful on Monday to not go to church until April 10.

Police checks to ensure compliance with the government’s rules are ongoing, with 700 checks conducted and seven businesses booked in the last 24 hours for breaking the law.
