Nursing staff and doctors who worked with a heart surgeon who has tested positive for coronavirus are in self-isolation even though they have tested negative, spokesman of the State Health Services Organisation Pambos Harilaou told the Cyprus News Agency.

He said authorities had moved swiftly as soon as it was confirmed that the doctor had the virus.

Nicosia General Hospital, the largest medical facility on the island, suspended operations for 48 hours yesterday. A decision will be taken later today on whether this will be extended, depending on the advice of specialist infectious diseases doctors of the Health Ministry.

Operations which have been postponed will be rescheduled, while the accident and emergency unit is working as normal.

Harilaou said that the sections of the hospital where the confirmed case had used have been disinfected while 33 nurses and five doctors who work at the heart surgery unit are in self-isolation. All have tested negative for the coronavirus.

“We acted immediately from the first moment. We located the people who had come into close contact with the confirmed case. They were called in a sample taken which were sent to the Cyprus Institute of Genetics and Neurology and the results are negative,” he said.

Limassol Hospital suspended  normal operations for 48 hours as of Wednesday for 48 hours.

  • All outpatient appointments, admissions and surgeries of all specialisations are suspended for the next 48 hours.
  • Visitation hours will be strictly limited to official times, namely from 13:00-14:00 and 17:00-19:00 when it’s absolutely necessary.
  • Patients should visit A&E exclusively for emergencies.
  • People who have travelled to high risk areas and present mild symptoms should not visit A&E but remain home and call 1420 for instructions.
  • Citizens that came into contact with a confirmed incident should self-isolate and call 1420 for instructions.”
