Coronavirus: 100 Cypriots in China, all in good health FM spokesman says

There are 100 Cypriots currently in China and all are in good health, Foreign Ministry spokesman Demetris Samuel told Radio Active on Thursday.

Commenting on the coronavirus outbreak, Samuel said the Cypriots are in contact with the embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Beijing. Fifty are love permanently in China and the remaining 50 are visitors, he added.

Four Cypriots are studying in the city of Wuhan, which is at the centre of the outbreak and in effective lockdown, but are not currently in the city as they had left because of the Chinese New Year holiday.

The Foreign Ministry is is constant consultation with the competent authorities as well as with the aiports and ports and is evaluating all new information, he added.

“Our embassy in Beijing is updating us daily and is in contact with all out compatriots who are in China,” he said.

The Foreign Ministry has issued a travel advisory while selective screening of passengers travelling from China has been introduced at the airports.

The Health Ministry has also set up a task force and drawn up a plan of action in line with the instructions of the World Health Organisation and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
