Consumers buy tiles, marble from Turkey misleadingly promoted as made in Greece

Relevant News

Even Greek Cypriots opposing trade with the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey at large may have made-in Turkey tiles, marble or even granite at home without even knowing it.

Because these construction materials are misleadingly promoted as made-in Greece, Philenews reports.

In fact, importers of such materials are actually competing unfairly with those who get them from Turkey through the breakaway Turkish-held northern area of the divided island.

Head of the divided island’s mosaic and marble importers branch Giorgos Mitsigiorgis explained that the unfair competition lies in the fact that there is no VAT on products that pass through the free areas within the framework of the green line regulation. The VAT on these products is 19%.

At the same time, labor costs are higher in the free areas of the Republic compared to the occupied ones or even Turkey.

In addition, Turkish marbles are believed to be imported to Greece and from there exported to Cyprus as made in the homeland and not in Turkey.
