The decision of the Health Insurance Organization to define criteria for the integration of new pharmacies to the National Health System (GESY) is under the microscope of the Commission or the Protection of Competition wishing to ascertain whether this decision if affecting competition and the smooth operation of the market.
The decision was the outcome of a relevant request by the Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association since young and new pharmacies acquired the relevant licenses from the Health Ministry but were informed that they could not joint the National Health System.
The issue was yesterday discussed at the House Health Committee, with the Auditor General attacking the Health Insurance Organization saying it cannot decide where one will operate his pharmacy.
Regarding the issue of criteria, the president of the Pharmaceutical Association noted that the number of private pharmacies in Cyprus is already very big and the criteria are needed so that the quality of services is maintained.
