Communities to protest closure of dangerous Akamas road

Relevant News

The road near Aphrodite’s Baths where a Russian couple were killed over the weekend has been closed at the decision of the police and the Forestry Department, infuriating local authorities in the area.

Polis Chrysochous mayor Yiotis Papachristofi said the road has been closed since Sunday. He described the decision as unacceptable and said he was calling a meeting for this evening to discuss the issue.

The specific road has been been used for ‘centuries’ as he said, by both locals who have work in the area as well as visitors to the Akamas.

“Based on official figures , 200,000 people use that road every year to access the interior of the Akamas from Aphrodite’s Baths. We disagree with the decision to close the road. It is a state road, within a state forest which can very easily and at low cost be improved and used safety. They should improve the road so that it can be used safely. Why close it completely?, he said,

Taking part in this evening’s meeting at the Town Hall will be Paphos MPs, community leaders of the Chrysochous area and other bodies. The meeting will demand the reopening of the road and repair work, he said.

A debate over the road has raged since a Russian couple was killed when their car plunged down a 30 metre cliff on Saturday.

The Greens said the road was dangerous and should not be accessible to the public. Local communities countered that the road should be repaired and said they would protest any move to close it.
